The
Lower Madison
Starting
below Ennis Reservoir and running north for approximately 35 miles to
its confluence with the Missouri, the lower Madison provides both excellent
wading and floating opportunities.
Current Conditions & Fishing Strategy 7-2:
Although the water is still up a bit, the river has been clearing nicely and the fishing has remained steady with some very nice fish being caught. Yellow Sally Stoneflies, a few PMDs and plenty of caddis make up most of the hatches right now and some smaller fish can be taken on dries along the banks. For the bigger fish, tactics have involved a big stike indicator, a little split shot and large, bugger-style flies with a san juan worm or small bead droppers. Your best bet right now is the fore-mentioned rig fished deep over the weed beds and along the banks. If your not catching fish, change flies regularly. Recommended Fly Patterns Nymphs:
Kyle's Yellow Sally, San Juan Worm, Delekta Worm, Lightning Bug
Streamer:
Zirdle, JJ Special, Olive Wooly Bugger, Brown Wooly Bugger, Girdle Bug, Egg Sucking Leach, Clouser Crayfish
Dries:
Elk Hair Caddis, Yellow Sally, Stimulators
