The Yellowstone River
As
the longest free flowing river in the lower 48 states, the Yellowstone
is the largest freestone river in our region. Beginning its journey
in Yellowstone Park, this river flows north out of the park to the town
of Livingston before heading East across the state. Because of
its size, the Yellowstone is best fished from a boat although wade fishing
is possible.
Current Conditions & Fishing Strategy 09/01/10
Our rainy cool weather has continued a little longer than expected, but for now, the Yellowstone is still in great shape and fishing well. The overcast days have brought a little color to the river, but it is still very fishable. Cloudy cool conditions have also brought on some great hatches of Blue Winged Olives. So far it seems that the smaller fish have been keying in on them, but it won't take too many days before the bigger fish get up on the surface as well. Some fish can still be caught with the Hopper Dropper combo, but for now, the nymphing has been the most productive. It looks like we are supposed to return to warmer weather in the next few days and that should bring back some of our big dry fishing. Recommended Fly Patterns Dries -
