Madison River Guide Trips

Located within a short drive from either of our River's Edge locations, the Madison River is home to some of the best trout fishing found anywhere. Divided into two very different stretches, the Upper and Lower, the Madison offers both floating and wading anglers great trout fishing opportunities in a unique scenic environment.

The Lower Madison River

Beginning downstream of Ennis Lake Dam, this river floats through the picturesque Bear Trap Canyon and eventually opens up into the ranchlands and cottonwood bottoms as it makes its way to the headwaters of the Missouri River near the town of Three Forks. The Lower Madison River is an outstanding early and late summer fishery when the water is cooler and the river's predominant population of brown trout are the most active. It is characterized by its meandering flow and shallow weed bed bottom that is home to a plethora of insects, crayfish and small baitfish making it a virtual trout paradise. It is a great option for float fishing but for the wading angler, it also lends itself to getting out of the boat and concentrating on some of the better riffles and runs.

The Upper Madison River

Known as the "50 mile riffle," the most common comment while fishing over the rocky bottom of the Upper Madison River is "it all looks good!" This is exciting and sometimes challenging drift fishing where good fly selections and long drifts are the key to success. With many different hatches often occurring during the same day, knowledge and experience can definitely make a difference. Our experienced guides know what it takes to make you successful on this finicky river.
