Missouri River

Saturday, May 29, 2021

May 29, 2021

3670 CFS @ Holter - The Missouri continues to fish well but the options are a bit more limited with the recent blowout of the Dearborn creating a dirty river below. Above there, the nymphing has been most consistent with small pink or grey stuff. Caddis and PMDs are around but not in great numbers and dry fly fishing has been spotty.

Recommended Flies:

Cotton Candy Pink #12
Yum Yum Pink #16
Firebead Sowbug Grey #16
EZ Caddis Tan #16
Splitcase PMD #16

3640 CFS below Holter - The Missouri River flows have been holding steady, which means good things for the fishing. Anglers have been picking up fish on nymphs consistently, with BWO nymphs, sowbugs, and caddis pupa. Fish are rising to BWO dry flies and march browns on the lower river. We expect to see a nice caddis hatch with this warmer weather.

Recommended Flies:

Film Critic BWO #18
Para Hi-viz Emerger Olive #16
SH Sowbug Pink #16
Petrified Pupa Olive #14
Mongrel Meat Black #1

3760 CFS @ Holter - The Missouri River flows have been holding pretty steady recently, which means good things for the fishing. While the water is considered a bit low, anglers have been picking up fish on nymphs consistently. Focus on BWOs, midges, and even some March browns. On overcast days, the BWOs and midges can bring some heads to the surface. And don't forget to try streamers. This is a great time of year for landing big fish.

Recommended Flies:

JR's Conehead Streamer #6
K's Kreelex, Copper/Gold #6
Beadhead Czech Nymph, Pink #16
Two-Bit Hooker, Pink #16
Batwing Emerger, BWO #18
Last Chance Cripple, BWO #18

3730 CFS @ Holter - The Missouri is in good shape right now with stable flows and good clarity. Lots of midges and baetis on the water with dry fly fishing picking up every day, especially when it's overcast. The flows are great for wading at the moment. Nymphing has been very productive, especially on the upper river. Streamer fishing has been decent as well.

Recommended Flies:

Zebra Midge #16
Mini Mo Czech #16
Rocky Mtn Mint #18
Sparkle Flag BWO #20
Kreelex #6

3420 CFS Bl. Holter- The Mo' is one of the better spots to fish right now. The best fishing is still below the Holter Dam. Nymphing with pink and black bugs works well over this way. The fish are still stacked in the deep slots and runs. If swinging flies is your game this is a great place to fish.
